Norh Road - more traffic if rail tunnel is on the North side
Hey folks, Translink is having meetings regarding the new light rail up Clarke road, but still has to decide if the new tunnel will be North or South of North Road.
If it is on the North side, expect a lot more traffic as people try to take a short cut around the rail. The speeders are bad enough, especially at the bottom of the hill by the play park (really need a round-about at Rathburn before some kid or cyclist gets killed or hurt).
But if you can get out to a meeting, or e-mail, or call or write to let Translink know to build on the South side to reduce traffic being rerouted down a resedential street with a park for kids and lots of cyclist puffing it up the mountain...it would be aprreciated.

please give us more detail, how is this effecting mountain biking.
Norh Road - more traffic if rail tunnel is on the North side
I think you mean north or south of Clark Rd; North Rd runs north-south.

I'm still a little confused on how traffic being potentially re-routed is going to affect the residential area around Burnaby Mountain.
In the hypothetical situation that people will be taking North Rd instead of Clarke Rd to avoid the rail, they'd be wanting to take a right on Como Lake as it's quite a detour otherwise. Even so, it doesn't make sense as the left-turn lane onto North is tiny, and they're going to end up spending a lot more effort and taking longer to get back on Clarke again.

Sorry, I meant South of Broadway/Como Lake.
Well if the tunnel is right at Clarke and Como Lake, I think a lot of people will try to sneak around it by heading down Chapman if they are coming from Port Moody, or sneaking done North Road if they are coming from Burnaby.
A tunnel just North of Como Lake means a lot more trains passing thru the intersection, more congestion waiting for trains, even the perception of will have some people looking for a quicker route.
If they go under the intersection, then the road would stay the same.
There is a time restriction at Clarke and Chapman, but like the No Left turn signal at North Road and Broadway/Como Lake a few people just ignore it.
So people sneaking thru are probably in more of a rush, and less likely to slow down to 30km, there is the kids' park, and lots of younger cyclist going up the hill...
Apparently there was talk of a roundabout, speed bumps are out because they can damage firetrucks -- so I'm informed, but nothing has happened yet.
Locally, the the people just got flyer in the mail this week about the light rail meetings, and the Tri City News had a big article on Sunday.

Ah, that makes a lot more sense. Yes, I can see this happening.
Whatever effect on the surrounding area is, it doesn't make much sense for the track to cross Como Lake in the first place. It is a rather busy street, rush hour or no rush hour.
