New Gear Jammer

What are your thoughts on the new Gear Jammer trail?
First, I would like to thank the city of Burnaby for the construction of this new trail! I have ridden the trail about 3 times and overall I like the trail. However, I think that it does not meet it's goal of being a flowy fast trail ( although the older bottom section is excellent for speed and requires some technique to clean ). Already some of the older lines are being used on the new section to bypass the boring parts of the trail.
Prob. as the trail evolves, we can address some of it's short-commings!

Re: New Gear Jammer
I was suprised to find it the other day, i was on my little 4" bike and there was snow on the ground - but i cant wait to get out there are hit it again on a bigger bike. I thought it was rippin', the city did an excellent job. Though i did pass some people that were moving quite slow, i think the trail should be marked for expert riders (due to the speed the trail should be ridden at.)
Does the city have any other plans to build more fast/flowy singletrack in that area?

Re: New Gear Jammer
I rode the trail a few times before the snow fell. It was ok, but a little boring. It could be a nice trail for uphill climbing, though. My worry is that it will attract a lot of hikers, it is a very nice hiking trail - and mountain bikes can go really fast down this trail. It seems like it is only a matter of time until a hiker gets hit and hurt badly and that will be it for us riders. This happened on one of the trails I used to ride in Ontario (a young girl was hit), then mountain bikes were banned.
I really wish that a narrow, twisty singletrack trail was built (like Mel's or Nicole's), with a few stunts thrown in, this tends to keep the speed down somewhat. I view this trail as a nice, easy way to get down the mountain if you are feeling a bit tired or bored with the other trails. But it is a long way from being a fun trail. I hope they don't follow this pattern for a new Upper Snake trail.
The old GearJammer is still great, at least the upper part of the trail.
We really need dedicated mountain bike trails on the mountain, I think that's the only way we can guarantee future access. Hikers and mountian bikers generally don't mix, unless you are riding uphill.
Re: New Gear Jammer
So I finally remembered to head up the road to the new Gearjammer trail yesterday, and despite the mudholes, it was quite a bit of fun. However, I think I took a wrong turn somewhere because I ended up on the old lower gear jammer (basically a creekbed) and ended up on function junction by lower snake. I can't imagine this is the final route, and I think I took a wrong turn at a fork. Is this the case? I recall heading right at one point.
Re: New Gear Jammer
Yeh that is right gearjammer hooks up to the old trail after x-ing the powerlines the second time. For a nice ride around the creek gully, look to the right and a trail cuts in on slight uphill called upper cut. This is a much nicer ride down.
p.s whoever is trying to rebuild 911 near upper cut don't waste your time the city is on to you and please stop cutting down live trees. Respect the trails. Besides it's only a couple of months until the bike park opens.
Re: New Gear Jammer
Yeah, i went to check out the step up yesterday and whoever is trying to rebuild up there has really done a number.

Re: New Gear Jammer
I thought I try out the Cardiac Classic route and discovered the New Gear Jammer (old trail is unblocked and easily mistaken for an active trail, only sign I saw it was closed was down on Mels) and it was fun, like a down hill pump track.
But a couple spots need to be repaired from the rain and ruts, one tree root that juts out across the trail before a deep well of water is just asking for an endo (the soil is eroding out from under the root, which is beginning to stick out like leg waiting to trip someone, remember those citizen racers, just out for a personal challenge), and parts of the trail are mixed up (or perhaps like Nicoles these are choices like the log run or the easier round about) hard to figure which way to follow — I hit one descending curve (badly rutted, looked like some one ran their motor bike down the trail and spun out a 6 inch deep rut), when I should have taken the straight steep.
Ow, and we need a sign pointing up to Upper Cut, I whistled past the access, which doubles back up (not too obviously), and hit that horrible cobble strewn rock garden — on my 80mm XC HT bike, it was a little bououououououncy.
It was a fun ride doing the Caridac Classic loop, I started at the bottom of North Road, and um walked up Cardiac and um some other spots, but I've never raced, this is cross training for me, alas or maybe good news I can inline skate 42km in less time than it took me to ride, push, pull and grunt through that loop.
8 wheels or 2, so hard to decide...
Re: New Gear Jammer
So I've had a chance to ride the new Gearjammer twice in recent days and am liking the "mellow' alternative to Nicoles. Seems to have reasonable sight-lines, if people are responsible w/regards to speed there shouldn't be any incidents like the one mentioned above re: hiker/biker cock-up. After all, it's an "intermediate trail, not A-line ya know. ;)
Regarding Upper Cut. Seems little used. Why not be magnanimous and leave it to hikers? :o
So there's boulders ::) down the other way. We're "mountain" bikers right? Just htfu and give that portion some TLC............ :-*
new uppercut
following the last trail day there is now a new trail leading from the end of new gearjammer over to uppercut which leads down to lower snake. the other option is to continue straight down the boulder-y section to function junction and then up to lower snake. the alternate line part way down over to uppercut (and the old 911) has now been closed off - please respect the closure. the trail is quite fresh and may need some changes, we'd appreciate receiving rider's input. thanks.
