Barnet Skills Park -- opens ?
Submitted by Sk8r on Mon, 12/31/2007 - 16:25
I was just informed that the Skills Park will be open Feb. 1.
Can anyone confirm.
Be nice to see some photos.
How is access, can you ride there by going along the mtn trails or must you drive/ride the Barnet Highway?

Re: Barnet Skills Park -- opens ?
Schduled to open Feb.
You can access from Barney Hwy. Large paved parking lot just to the west.
You can also ride Trans Canada to Barnet trail and hop onto new xc trail (not yet named) that will take you just east of Skills Park.

There will be two areas with DJ table tops, one area will be a set ranging from beginner to intermediate and the other area will be a intermediate/advanced line
Re: Barnet Skills Park -- opens ?
Does the city have any plans to add a couple "expert" lines to this area, or anywhere else on the mountain? I know there are tons of young riders in the area at a high skill level that are pressed for challenging riding facilities around here. It would also help with the illigal trailbuilding problem Burnaby has been faced with for the past few years.

The latest from the City is that they expect the skill park to be open officially by May. If work is completed before then, it may open unofficially.
Re: Barnet Skills Park -- opens ?
Hi 1st off, I sure hope it is open by the summer, I m planning on visiting in Sept to ride and would love to try it. Hope some one would be willing to show me around if Judy, or John G can not do it.
Re: Barnet Skills Park -- opens ?
I hope the city collects a lot of rider input for this project. Look at the Shaughnessy bike park, the jumps are subpar - transitions were poorly built and near impossible. Thats why you see little riding activity on them. It would be wicked if the city could add stunts such as step up/step down boxes similar to those in whistlers boneyard, wallrides, and quarter pipes. Or other slopestyle sort stunts, That would surely attract riders from around the tri-cities. I know that's where i would be everyday.

I think Jay Hoots was drafted to design this one - so it should be pretty well thought out and executed. Dunno about slopestyle content, though.
Re: Barnet Skills Park -- opens ?
Sounds wicked, it seems like a much bigger project than i expected - after reading the artical on the homepage. How will people be able to access the park, will there be some sort of trail from the north road area?

Re: Barnet Skills Park -- opens ?
Evan, there is already a trail from North Road right to the bike park. You just take the Trans Canada Trail down the hill towards Barnett, turn left on the Cougar/Barnett trail, and that takes you right to the bike park parking lot. Of course, riding back up the hill back to Joe's is a tad strenuous, but a good workout.
I'd like to see a trail on the west side of the bike park to the Velodrome, so that I could hook up with Drummond's walk without having to ride on the Barnett Highway. I understand that it will be built as well at some point.
