New trail off Mel's Near Gearjammer?

Hello,
I keep noticing what looks to be a new trail crossing Mels' just to the east of Gear Jammer. There's a big sign there saying "Trail Closed" so I haven't explored it, but I am curious about it. Is it a new entrance to Gear Jammer? A new trail altogether to look forward to? A hiking-only trail? An unsanctioned rogue trail?

Re: New trail off Mel's Near Gearjammer?
This is the relocation of the Gear Jammer trail into a more sustainable trail. It will be designated multi-use as all trails are on Burnaby, but it is acknowledged that the primary users will be mtb'ers. The problem with the existing gear jammer was erosion and sedimentation down the skid line. The original gear jammer was a rogue trail that is the #1 source of siltation and contamination into the Stoney Creek stream system. When it was heard the the City of Burnaby was going to permanently close this trail, some people rallied to argue that the trail should not be closed without an alternative developed. As such, with some funding from a concerned donor, the City engaged professional trail design services used frequently in Whislter and the North Shore and had a new route formulated. The new Gear Jammer will be nearly 3 times the length from SFU B parking Lots to its intersection with Sidecut/Skidder. The top portion from the B lot to Mel's will be largely a blue square trail that will have a compacted base and will (when grown back in) be about 1m wide. Future additions (hopefully by BMBA) will have features and stunts added on side-routes. The lower portion below Mel's will be a black diamond hand built trail less than 0.6m wide when grown back in and will twist and wind its way down to Sidecut. The very bottom portion will be permanently closed due to high erosion and contamination of Stoney Creek. This shows that the City of Burnaby is aware of the value of mountain biking to its community and on Burnaby mountain.

Add the new skill park and trail along Barnet and you have a substantial amount of work happening on the mountain. At a recent open house a city member mentioned the work done by the BMBA in bringing forward the need for new areas to ride.
Congrats to the club for your hard work.
What is the completion date for these projects?

Thanks very much for taking the time to post that info. It certainly is great to see the commitment to the trails by the city and volunteers!
Re: New trail off Mel's Near Gearjammer?
Valhalla trail construction is doing the work and they are expected to have the trail open December 1. They have completed the clearing and packing of both upper and lower gear jammer and bridgework and ladders are under construction. This will be followed by cribbing and then putting the crushed topping on the upper part. The upper part of gear jammer (from Mels to campus) will actually be rideable in the uphill direction as well, which is great, as the ride from the TransCanada and up Mel's is a nice alternative for those that actually like to pedal a bike and not just coast it.
