Gear Jammer & Upper Snake

I have received a call from the city in regards to the recent trail work on Upper Snake and Gear Jammer. As is the case with this type of trail work the city is concerned and will most likely remove the work. The one item which is disturbing is that according the the city live trees have been removed or damage to create new stunts. Not sure if anyone reading this is responsible for the recent work but tampering with live trees is completely unacceptable.

Do we have specifics on where exactly did the tree downing happen?
I'm interested in checking it out later this week.

if they are referring to that logride that was built on upper snake, that was a downed tree for a storm a while back, i rode it the next day while that log was laying across the trail, somebody moveed it aside

maybe poeple should just stop building. It was only a matter of time before the city would find the work done on upper snake. I never thought the work on upper snake was not well built but creating a bunch of hucks is a problem. The city now instead of working on the existing trails is going to spend time ripping out stuff that never should have been built.

We are attempting to work with the city to develop a maintenance plan and "rogue building" even though well intentioned creates problems with the BMBA and the city and the limited resources they have. As previously mentioned the workers will now be dealing with taking down instead of repairing existing trails. The workers do not want to be spending time ripping out new building or trail development. The city has legitimate concern that need to be addressed before building structures can be considered, if at all. The workers would much rather spend their time productively fixing the trails. I know it seems as though everything takes so long, but in the long run it will be to our benefit. There will be a presentation to the parksboard next week - I think Wednesday April 19 to update the commission as to how far we have come. I think it would surprise a lot of people what has been accomplished in one year. Come out and support us and see where we have been and what we would like to see in the future.
Once again I know the frustration, believe me I know the frustration - but by working together we can make Burnaby Mountain a better place to ride.

i belive people are building these stunts because they are waiting for the bmba and city to do something to the trails for like over year now, and nothing has happened, so people feel that there is nothing to ride and have to build their own stuff to have a good ride or the rush of a good jump or drop, without a long commute especially people that do not drive. The snake drop is not even very big it was built well and the people that can ride that trail can deffinatly do that drop. People are gonna hurt themselves on other parts of snake easier than that drop such as steep rooty and rocky sections by gettign bucked over the bars and such. All the other mountains around have found a way to allow stunts 10 times more difficult that burnaby. Burnaby is prob the easiest mountain in B.C.

Burnaby prolly doesn't care what exists elsewhere. From what I understand, the shore had these same problems ten years ago. It takes time. Consider yourself lucky that the city hasn't banned bike riding on single tracks all together. There was a time, in terms of skateboarding, when police would ticket you or give you the option to break your skateboard - consider yourself lucky that they are even talking with us. Once work gets started, it can't be long before all the obstacles (sounds better than stunts when talking to suits) are built. BUT, until then, patience is the best option. Put it this way - right now you have to sell the city on the idea that this can be managed safely and inexpensively. Any time you sell stuff, you need to put on the best front possible so that the city can see what a responsible (in other words, responsible for their own and other peoples' safety) group mountain bikers are. Building all these stunts says two things to the city:
1) mountain bikers are not willing to work within the policy set forth by local government. they MUST be an irresponsible user group and should not be provided with risks that could create problems for us in the future, especially expensive legal problems.
2) this BMBA obviously doesn't represent the interests of all mtbers. Perhaps working with them will not curb the illegal building of unsafe obstacles. perhaps it is a mistake to allow such a group to claim legitimacy of representation of mtbers, and perhaps we should not work with such a disorganized group of people.
I am not saying that this is the case. the city IS working WITH the BMBA, but there are concerns that the city needs to be reassured about. the way NOT to reassure the city the mtbing is safe is to build all sorts of crazy structures without permission (crazy is relative. what is small and safe to you is crazy to someone who rarely hikes these trails, let alone rides them). Thus, the need for patience and good public relations (AKA the political representation of mtb. as "safe" investment for the city to make)
eep the rubber side down.

Good post jayman. Now if only everyone who rode the mountain was reading this forum...

Jayman got it - definitely agree.
