Temporary Trail Closures
Info on trail closures.
Upper Snake & section of Gear Jammer temporary closure. According to the city this will not be a permanent closure. They are concerned about existing line of the trail and erosion that is occurring. They are currently looking at what needs to be done on the trail either re route certain sections and/or address eroded areas. We are in contact with them on a regular basis in regards to this. They realize the importance of this trail and want to come up with a long term solution. It would probably helpful to get riders opinions on what we would like to see. There has been talk of creating more of zig zag type similar to lower snake as one option or keep the existing line and re route only certain areas

Lower Snake is open.

Temporary Trail Closures
Oh no...
Zig-zag??? they're gonna dumb down that trail aren't they :(
That trail was the single fast smooth flowing trail on the mountain. Last year those small earth dams (small drops) were put in, which fixed many of the erosion sections. What needs to be done is make more of those dams (with roll down ladders at the end for those who don't want to launch them) and maybe some rock armoring/drainage ditches - NOT zig-zagging!

I'm of the opinion that proper armouring and reinforcement is the solution.
The more eroded sections of the trail, as far as I can see, go through some areas with some fairly dense vegetation, and would be neigh impossible to reroute effectively, without resulting to shore-style stunts. The lower sections are actually in fairly good shape after the drops were put in to slow down water erosion. Since the trail is such a short and relatively advanced route, use is quite limited, and most of the erosion occurs due to weathering.

Keep the rubber side down, and the geeky side out
Temporary Trail Closures
would it be possible to connect turns that zigzag across the existing drops? that would give the less advanced rider the option to ride around drops without affecting the drops themselves
eep the rubber side down.
Temporary Trail Closures
Just got back form a ride on the mtn, before seeing this thread. Snake has got closure signs on it I have heard, but gear jammer does not. We actually rode gear jammer (sorry), not knowing it was closed. Then we saw the new sign in the trials park and figured it out. But I was wondering if there need to be some signs placed at the gearjammer trailhead?
By the way, who makes a map with south facing up?
Looks good otherwise.
Also, if these closures are only temporary, would the city really have gone to print those trail map signs with the trails saying closed on them? Making such nice signs seems a bit more permanent to me...
Temporary Trail Closures
why r those trails even closed? they seem fine to me other than a little drainage problems here and there but nowhere near as bad as nicoles or mels
Temporary Trail Closures
liability posibly? incase someone eats it and hurts themselves the city can say you shouldnt be on those trails anyways. i dont know. Steve said they have always been closed on trail maps, and like Rob said why would they put up the posts saying trails temporarily closed :?

the city boggles my mind with the things they do

Whatever happens with snake and gear jammer had better suit ALL riders that use the mountain - if they close these trails and wreck all the stunts and dumb them down then all that will do is promote "rogue building" because the DH riders will feel totally ignored in this effort to reshape BM. Even just the fact that they're closed has already gotten many riders thinking the worst and we all have a pesimistic view about it, and I'm an optimistic guy!! And that fact is totally absurd - when a trail is closed for straight up maintance then riders are a little bummed because it's closed, but overall are happy that they will have a nice, good condition trail to ride on. In this case everyone fears the worst is going to happen, so this is an opportuntiy for the BMBA and the city to send a message that they are serious about catering to ALL rider types. I think that opening up anything but an ALL rider trail will only hinder everyone's efforts for the advancement of BM as the dh'ers will build and the city will "waste time" tearing down stuff instead of building and maintaining new stuff.

i totaly agree with serial crusher. If the city keeps tearing down stuff it will make the advanced riders build. It's really a viscious cycle.
prob the best idea is to build paths around the stunts and big warning signs showing the city has no responsability for any injuries on stunts.
IAnd also if there is nowhere for the "DHers" to ride from making allpurpose trails they will build.
