Voluntary Trail Closure?

What is people’s opinion of having a voluntary closure of some trails after heavy rainfall?

I would say yes trail cloures but only to certain trails like Nichols and Upper Snake. Mels drains well and so does the North Rd trails. The problem with Burnaby mountain is to many careless riders. BMBA is doing a good job with education keep it up. I had the chance to ride upper snake and found the recent trail work to be terrible  :x a lot of jumps have been created with no options to ride around and no clearance at the jump ends. This should be reported to the city.

I'm for trail closure as well, although it will be extremely hard to enforce.

(Also, without intention to hijack the thread, the upper snake constructions were done mostly to stop erosion, and coincidentally ends up being drops due to the locations and materials available)

It is probably a good idea to do a voluntary closure until the rain subsides a little and there is a chance to do some trail maintenance. there is a lot of work to do to repair some of the damage and to work on some drainage issues.

If people are interested in helping my number is 604 294 1586. I will be able to facilitate contacting people that might do some trail work

Like Yang said above, those small earth dams were created to stop the steep sections of the trail from eroding and washing out even further. Without them the trail would turn in a big run-off rut and would be impossible to ride. They need a bit of time to settle down (to let the earth flow fill up all the gaps in the base stones), afterwards an option would be puttting small wooden roll-down ramps (like on Nicole's) for those riders not cumfortable launching off.

The beginning of Mels trail (just south of the South Science Bldg in the SFU lands) about 100 ft in the trail splits you can go west thru Naheeno Park or east. The section of trail heading east is in really poor shape, lots of standing water and very eroded just prior to the creek crossing. If people could avoid this section at least until rain subsides and area gets repaired. Riding west thru Naheeno will link you back to the rest of the trail.

Good call. This area should not be used until repaired.

Dino and Ron had given SFU a proposal to get this area repaired it was a good plan, involved combo of armor and new ladders. This should be re visited to see if it can get done.
