TRAIL CONDITIONS

One item the city as well as our group would like to see is update posts on trail conditions. Please use this forum to post any trail concerns, damage, required maintenance etc. This will assist us in addressing problem areas.

SFU top of trail needs lots of work. Complete mud and puddles.

This area has been a concern to us. It falls under SFU lands and we have been talking to them on getting some work done. They have mentioned over the last few weeks that some repair work maybe taking place this month the problem is a good chunk of the trail is scheduled to be developed into housing so they are hesitant to spend any money at this time.

The SFU Outdoor Resource Club approched the people responsible for the wooded areas of campus a few months ago, and were also mostly unsuccessful in getting much co-operation going.

Although a broken bridge or two were patched, and a few new ladders were put in soon after, I recall them being hesitent to do any major repairs or accepting the help of non-payroll personnel to do the work for them for free.

SFU has started to do some work on the trails. The first stage will be do build a bridge over the gravel pond near mid section of trail followed by repair of some of the other bridges. The other area of concern is the exit to ring road. They would like our input on this work. I am still awaiting an answer on if they will allow us to do work per our proposal. Probably will have a walk thru with SFU next week if anyone is interested.

I'm interested.

Bridge is in. Next part is to fix up the bank where trail exits at ring road. They want to re route bikers to the left side instead of riding straight down. I posted photos on our MSN board.

The bridge is about 4 feet wide with railings, less than 2 feet above the rocks.

It's very much a hiker-friendly structure. (I actually ran into an old couple taking a walk through the trials before I discovered the new bridge yesterday)

Its actually part of and paid for by SFU. We have been trying to get them to do work for a few months now, so its good to see they finally have started. Unfortunately a few minor projects are planned and that will be it for this year. We are trying to see if BMBA can do some work on the trail in particular east section at start of trail, which is a mess when it rains. SFU has our proposal put forward about 2 months ago but we are still waiting an answer. In the past they have had problems with mountain bikers so it been a bit of a struggle on getting work done and most likely any work that does get done will be maintenance to enhance the trail for the multi users not particularly bikers.
