2nd Annual BMBA Kids Bike Camp

Date:
Saturday, 4 July 2009

July 4th marks the start of the Tour de France – it also is the same day as the Second Annual BMBA Kids Bike Camp at the Burnaby Mountain Air Skills Bike Park on Barnet Highway

The camp is sponsored by the Burnaby Mountain Biking Association, the Burnaby Optimists, Endless Biking and Caps’ Cycles and the smiles of the category winners in the tour pale in comparison to the smiles of the kids that attended the camp.

The second camp saw participation go from fourteen kids, in the first year, to almost forty kids aged six to twelve.  The kids’ enthusiasm was evident as the kids raced around the parking lot waiting for the start of the camp.

Two certified instructors, Ginny Stratton and Ryan Purcell from Endless Biking, taught the kids basic skills, proper helmet fit and quick mechanical bike checks to proper body positioning and riding “skinnies” (thin elevated platforms such as logs).  They were assisted by BMBA directors Ron Burton, Dino Sartori, Brent Wilson and John Preissl.

Lunch was provided for all the campers by the Burnaby Optimists – Cathy Cena, Ken and Lou Ryan, Bill Cunningham  and their  crew.  The hot dogs, chips and drinks were appreciated after the morning of skills training.

The afternoon saw the kids divided into abilities and the more advanced riders head out for a tour of the trail Hang Your Hat while the other kids stayed in the park to hone the skills they had learned.

At the end of the day there were a few bumps and scrapes, but a lot of kids who had learned some basic mountain biking skills that they can use until they learn more at the third camp next year.
