New Member, wondering if this my kind of club?

Hi there, first let me say thet the condition of the BM trails is exceptional.  Great Work!

I'm a 50 year old guy living a few meters form the North Road parking lot. I've been ridig the main trail or Gaglardi Rd to the Uni lot, then down Cardiac 4 or 5 times a week for exercise the last couple years.  I've ridden most if not all the DH trails at one time or another but don't have the skill required to stay healthy so I stick to the weenie trails most times

I ride an 07 Santacruz  Superlight with XCR kit. I'm wondering if this is primarily a DH group or if there is a taste for more sedate XC riding.  While passing your group rides, I see much armour in the crowd. What  I seek is to put a little time into a worthwwhile endevour, and perhaps meet some more likeminded riders for a run up the hill with me in the evenings. Perhaps at this age, I can even improve my skills.

I ride with a couple others from time to time, and try to go all year round. Working on a better light.

I have in the last couple years tackled Elfin Lakes, some Test O Metal, Lost Lake, Ring Creek Rip ( no pump house for me tho), Green Lake loop, so I'm not a total weenie :-}

Thoughts?

Your type of club

Hello Ken,

A little late on a response. I finally decided its high time for me to get involved in this forum. I have seen a few too many clubs fade with little or no communication. First off,I have been involved with the club for quite awhile and I am very impressed with executive and all the volunteers. It seems like last week when 10 of us went into the Parks meeting and asked for permission to work with the city to do some trail upkeep and the like. I dragged my two young girls to that meeting( I will do it again in a heartbeat) they learned alot in that short meeting. Four or five years later and my girls are reaping the awards of those first meetings. The youngest was in her first race at the Cardiac Challenge and picked up the win with five other 9-13 year olds. She was very nervous until she got riding and won a ton of swag. The West Coast Racing boys and girls are very cool. This race was very organised and a ---- load of fun. We went to the beach and when we came back to the parking lot the Sweeper crew were just finishing up there clean up at 5:00 pm-very impressive. Thanks Gary from the club( more later on this race). She also took part in the clubs youth day with some great coaches from Endless Biking and the BMBA-Thanks Andrew, Ron, Brien and the Burnaby Optimist Club. I learned a whack and the BBQ was killer.

Almost the entire family is enjoying the bike park. My younger brother and his kids are killing the park. He is 44 and is almost to the top of the big wall and a maniac in the jumps, who knew. The bike park opening was a good time had by all. When I arrived I had to use my press credentials to get parking. Hats off to you all for all the hard work and endless meetings to pull this off. We took in two billets for two nights who raced in the Giro Di Burnaby and the other BC Superweek races in July. They were unbelievable and very professional and fast. They were blown away with the cycling support in Burnaby. On their training ride I sent them to the Velodrome and the bike park. They couldn't believe the bike trails through north Burnaby and on the mountain. We were so impressed with this couple that friends of the BMBA decided to sponsor their entry fees for the Giro and the Gastown races next year. Taitt just finished third overall in the USA Super Crits Tour and Devon finished 15th overall. Devon also picked up a National Championship in the Velodrome. Very inspiring couple and highly reccomended for all. The kids loved these two( more later on this skinny tire couple).

I have not made any trail days this year due to my back, however I will be there next year with camera and light load stuff. Ken this was kind of a bike rant but I thought it was a good place to start. I to think that its time for the club to start riding more and organising some rides and get togethers. I will be asking for a few volunteers for next years Cardiac. This was a great event and the West Coast Crew have helped us out a lot. The Tuesday and Wednesday night guys ride every week and have been for years. The trails are in great shape now before the rains come. The bike park has been a good meeting point for even us old guys and I have been riding there and Hangman? and the bottom of Cardiac. This club truly is one of the most successful clubs in Canada-lets keep it that way.

See you on the mountain and thank you all.

Hi Ken,First off...the

Hi Ken,

First off...the BMBA is not a "club", our primary focus is to look after the trails on Burnaby Mountain for all user groups.  We do not organize club rides or have the insurance to do so. If you are looking to hook up with other riders, a really good place to start is www.nsmb.com and post in the Ride Planning forum.
