Hi everybody!
Hi folks,
Nice website, I was one of the founding members of the original Burnaby Mountain Bike Club that formed about 15 years ago. A few of the founding members, not myself, were SFU students so we were a registered SFU intermural club.
I rode the mountain every day between 1990 and 1994 when I commuted from Pt. Moody to Norco when they were in Lake City. The club rode the mountain Wednesday nights year round and we did a lot of trail restoration maintenance and construction. We built Dead Moped, Nicole's Trail, named for another founder's new born daughter, Lower Snake and the switch backs on Mel's the lead down to Cardiac. Those were thoughtfuly torn out by some moron so I restored them my self. I also upgraded the North Road Trail below the parking area to all weather status as it was part of my commuter route and the club did a major trail day there to put in all the original log drops.
We built another trail called Weenie Boy that dropped down from the bridge located at the bottom of the switch back just before the top of Nicole's when riding from ring road. Weenie Boy was closed due to it's proximity to the creek, a small price to pay to gain legal access to the rest of the mountain. We also did a lot of the original rock and log cribbing in the wetter and root bound areas to create durable all weather trail beds, control speed to reduce user conflicts and maintain the technical challenge.
The BMBC did NOT build the Rickity Bridge Trail or the rickety bridge that was located below Cardiac and went down towards the Barnett Highway. While the trail was fine the bridge was unsafe and well below our construction standards.
Our club members were also involved in other areas too. We did trail days with Ross Kirckwood on 7th Secret and on Saw Blade with Tom Verba. I was VP of Off Road for Cycling BC, President of GETPARC when The Golden Ears Challenge ran and worked with EMP briefly. Another of the BMBC's founding members was on the trail committee at Bunzen Lake that opened legal access to that area for mountain bikers.
I was up on the mountain last week for the first time in 8 years. I rode Cardiac, Mels' Nicole's, Lower Cut/Gear Jammer, Dead Moped and the North Road Trail in both directions. Judging by the condition of the trails and the photos here on the site you guys have done and are doing a great job keeping up the trails on the mountain. Thanks for all your great work and I know how much work it is to do that.

Hey Dave,Still get out once
Hey Dave,
Still get out once in awhile with Erik. He's still doing Thursday night rides all these years later. Glad you like the state the trails are in. Nicole's is probably the single most ridden trail in the Lower Mainland. Still a fun rip hundreds of times later, a real testament to a great trail. I wonder if the real Nicole has even seen it?
